Two of our number, Leah and Susan, attended the MRS training workshop on Online Panels and Communities in May 2021. In this blog, they talk about the benefits of the course.

Running Panels

It was a full day course and, as with everything else, was held online due the pandemic. The benefit of this was that we didn't have to deal with the awful red-eye flight to London and could attend the session in our 'comfies'.

The course moderator, Tom De Ruyck, took us through the benefits of an online panel, the initial planning and set up, managing the panel once established, and how to motivate and engage with panellists. We learned that there is a lot of work involved and a wide variety of skillsets are required. The course also provided handy tips to allow us to better manage our online surveys in general, touching on topics like questionnaire design and creative survey invites.

The course has enhanced our understanding of:

    • The importance of making the surveys as interesting and engaging as possible;
    • The importance of setting expectations with panellists in terms of how often you communicate with them and how they would like to be communicated with; and
    • The importance of language to attract and keep motivated and engaged panellists.
